TASERs are used across America and Abroad
As of October 2004, over 5,000 police departments in the United States and abroad had purchased TASER products. Over 200 police departments – including Phoenix, San Diego, Sacramento, Albuquerque and Reno – have purchased TASER products for every patrol officer. TASER products penetrate the private security and consumer markets, and provide the law enforcement community with safer, effetive devices.
Effective non-lethal weapons increase the safety of law enforcement officers, decrease suspect injuries, improve community relations, reduce litigation and police department medical and liability insurance costs, and save lives. Nearly all law enforcement agencies authorize the use of non-lethal weapons, including pepper sprays, impact devices and conducted energy weapons such as TASERs.
TASER is among the safest, most effective non-lethal weapon available to law enforcement officers.
Development of TASER
TASER International, Inc. develops, assembles and markets non-lethal, conducted energy weapons primarily for use in the law enforcement, corrections, private security and personal defense markets.
The AIR TASER first became available to citizens concerned about personal security in June 1994, after the ATF certified that the AIR TASER was not a firearm and is not subject to the same regulations as the TASER.
In 1998, the company began Project Stealth: the development of the higher power weapons to stop extremely combative, violent individuals who were impervious to non-lethal weapons.
The result of Project Stealth was the ADVANCED TASER M26. Models of the ADVANCED TASER were successfully tested on various Arizona police SWAT team members, each of whom were knocked down and subdued by the device, without injury.
The ADVANCED TASER uses proprietary technology to incapacitate dangerous, combative, or high-risk subjects that may be impervious to other non-lethal means. The ADVANCED TASER has a lower injury rate than other non-lethal weapons and has had no reported long-term, adverse after-effects. The technology of the device is effctive regardless of pain tolerance, drug use, or body size – factors that cause other non-lethal options to have decreased effectiveness.
The first large scale U.S. demonstration of the ADVANCED TASER took place in 1999, which was then repeated internationally. The first 30 ADVANCED TASER production units were shipped to New York City Police (NYPD) for field-testing soon after. By 2000, certified TASER instructor courses hosted by law enforcement agencies throughout the United States reached 15 per month by May of that year and increased to 25 times per month by May of 2003.
Following the September 11th World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks, the company announced that the ADVANCED TASER M26s were available to aviation security. During the fourth quarter of 2001, United Airlines and Mesa Airlines, located in Phoenix, Arizona announced purchases of ADVANCED TASERs for cockpit security.
On May 30, 2003, TASER International introduced the new TASER X26 with Shaped Pulse™ Technology. The TASER X26 offers even greater stopping power than the ADVANCED TASER M26 – in a package that is 60% smaller and lighter. Optimized for full time carry on the duty belt, the X26 ships in a complete system including an ambidextrous eXoskeleton™ Holster. We believe the X26 will transform law enforcement and become a vital tool for patrol level law enforcement offices around the world.
Coporate History
TASER SAVES LIVES EVERY DAY
In 1991, TASER’s founders, brothers Rick and Tom Smith, were increasingly concerned about the growing violence around them after two former high-school teammates of Rick Smith were brutally murdered by an angry motorist in a resort parking lot in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Along with TASER inventor Jack Cover, the trio began work in 1993 on a non-lethal self-defense device. The result of the garage-shop beginning was the production of a device that has revolutionized personal protection and law enforcement.
In June 1994, after Rick and Tom Smith developed a non-firearm version of the TASER, they also engineered a unique tracking system to make citizens accountable when the TASER was utilized. This system, known as the anti-felon identification (AFID) system, disperses dozens of small confetti with serial numbers that match back to the owner of the TASER device. In that same month, the ATF certified that the AIR TASER was not a firearm and is not subject to the stringent regulations that were placed on the original TASER.
The AIR TASER became a successful self-defense tool available to citizens concerned about personal security. Over the past decade, 100,000 citizen TASER systems were sold.
During 1998 AIR TASER, Inc. changed its name to TASER, International, Inc. to reflect the company’s international expansion and the introduction of the AIR TASER to the law enforcement community in 1998.
Following its tremendous success in developing its ADVANCED TASER Electro-Muscular Disruption (EMD) technology and the associated dramatic injury reduction at law enforcement agencies, TASER, International, Inc. filed for an IPO in May 2001 and began public trading on the NASDAQ under the symbol TASR.
In May 2003, TASER International introduced the new TASER X26 with Shaped Pulse Technology. The TASER X26 has dynamically influenced significant changes in over 5,500 law enforcement communities and has created a vital tool for patrol level deployment around the world.
TASER International, Inc. continues to research, develop, assemble and market non-lethal, conducted energy weapons to save lives every day primarily for use in the law enforcement, corrections, military, private security and personal defense market.
TASER International’s corporate headquarters with its manufacturing facility is located in Scottsdale, Arizona. For further information, please contact IR@TASER.com or call 800-978-2737 ext. 2005.
